What is endotoxin testing?
Endotoxin testing measures the concentration of bacterial cell-wall fragments, lipopolysaccharides, from gram-negative bacteria in a dust or water sample. The sample is analyzed by Limulus Amebocyte Lysate kinetic chromogenic assay at an accredited laboratory. Elevated levels are common in buildings with a long water loss history, in agricultural and industrial environments, and in properties with significant pest history. The point worth understanding is that endotoxins are not living organisms. They are fragments that remain after the bacteria die, so they can persist in settled dust long after the moisture source was corrected and the visible problem resolved. That is why a mold panel can come back unremarkable while the air still raises questions, and why this test is often paired with mold sampling rather than run instead of it.
