Volatile organic compound (VOC) testing analyzes indoor air for airborne organic chemicals from off-gassing materials, cleaning products, combustion sources, and building materials. Common in new construction, post-renovation, and homes with chemical sensitivity concerns.
What is VOC testing?
VOC testing measures volatile organic compounds in indoor air, collected on a thermal-desorption tube and analyzed by GC-MS under EPA Method TO-17 and ISO 16000-6. It reports total VOCs, total mold VOCs as a marker of active microbial growth, and significant individual compounds by CAS number with source attribution. It is the right test when occupants report headaches, chemical odors, or symptoms that mold air sampling alone does not explain, and in new construction or after a remodel where building materials, adhesives, flooring, and furnishings are still off-gassing. The mold VOC fraction is worth separating out, because those gases are produced by mold while it is actively growing and are what a musty smell actually is. Results are read alongside the humidity and ventilation conditions documented during the same visit. The report lists each sampling location and the method used at it.
